Words

A little over a month ago I watched The Last Kiss thinking it would be something like Garden State and I'd love it just the same. Nope. This was a movie about the painful things that people do to each other and it was all too real. It made me feel nauseous. The following passage from the movie gave the feelings some words. It seemed too underhanded or passive-aggressive to write about it at the time, but now... why not?

"Stop talking about love. Every asshole in the world says he loves somebody. Means nothing. What you feel only matters to you. It's what you do to the people you say you love. That's what matters. It's the only thing that counts."

It's not that words don't matter. When first said, words can mean more than anything, and their absence is a notable signal, but in the context of an established relationship where "i love yous" are exchanged, behavior counts more. If you really love someone, you treat them as you would want to be treated.

It sounds so simple.
