Detox

A few weeks ago a friend at work suggested we "detox" after the new year. Not that either of us are particularly toxin-laden or toxic in our lifestyles, but we decided to go ahead with the plan. We decided to start on Jan 2 knowing that the 1st would require a healthy dose of caffeine and "junk" food, and go for two weeks (through Jan 16). She picked out the collection of supplements (milk thistle, artichoke leaf extract, dandelion root extract, licorice root, rhizome extract, fiber supplements, calcium supplements, and multivitamins) and I got to design the diet. Now ordinarily I'm a fan of imposing draconian dietary guidelines, but the more we chatted about detox at work, the more people wanted to play along - so I had to be realistic.

I came up with the following plan:

No
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Sugar
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Full fat dairy (cream, cheese, ice cream, etc)
  • Simple carbohydrates (white bread, plain pasta, rice, potatoes)
  • Red meat
  • Trans fat
  • Junk food
  • Fried foods
Yes
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Lean proteins
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Nuts and legumes
  • Nonfat dairy (unsweetened)
  • Whole grain carbohydrates
  • Herbal tea
  • Water
  • Juice (small amounts)
I mean, really it's not that creative - it's what you know you should eat and what you know you shouldn't. What's different is that now there are six or seven of us doing it together - and enforcing each other.

I'll let you know how it goes. I was missing my tea this morning.
