Deutschland? Germany? Allemagne?

I have never understood the naming system that we use for geographical locations. Why does each city or country have a different name in each language? I understand the potential applications for having a different name for each alphabet system (Roman, Cyrillic, etc.), but it's not like English, French or Spanish speaking people can't wrap their tongues around Firenze. The entirely confusing array of names for Germany is perhaps the best example of this bizarre transgression of logic.

It seems like it would make the most sense for each place to keep the name in the official language of that country. No more Etats-Unis, just United States. No more Prague, just Praha. Hmmm. That's what I'm thinking about tonight. Tomorrow I play doctor for the first time.
